Google Images Gets 25th Anniversary Makeover

Google Images is receiving a significant update for its 25th anniversary, marking a quarter-century since its launch in July 2001. While the interface remains visually similar, the company states that search results will now be "updated in real time" and "intelligently tailored to your unique interests." Users can continue to save images to collections, with saved items appearing as tabs above the gallery for easy access. The updated, more intelligent Image results page will begin rolling out on desktop in the US in English in the coming weeks. A Google account login will be required to save images.

In addition to the interface changes, Google is also integrating its Nano Banana AI image generator into AI Overviews in Search. This will allow users to create images directly from the search page using text prompts. The feature will be available in regions supporting image creation in AI Mode. Google highlighted that the initial impetus for Google Images was the demand to see Jennifer Lopez's iconic green Versace dress following her appearance at the 42nd Grammy Awards in 2020, demonstrating the need for visual search beyond simple links.
