Former Fitbit exec launches UV-tracking smart necklace The Gem

A new smart jewelry company called The90 has unveiled The Gem, a pendant necklace that monitors UV exposure in real-time. Founded by Stacy Salvi, who spent eight years at Fitbit before and after Google's acquisition, The90 aims to carve out a niche in the wearable market with fashion-forward health tracking.

The round necklace houses sensors that detect both UVA and UVB rays, continuously measuring exposure as wearers move throughout their day. Whether someone is walking outdoors or sitting near a sunny window, The Gem collects data that syncs to a companion app. This app builds a personalized skin profile to determine individual UV thresholds and deliver targeted recommendations.

Unlike other UV sensors on the market from companies like Shade or L'Oreal, The Gem distinguishes itself as actual pendant jewelry rather than a clip-on device. The company positions this as an entirely new wearable category, merging aesthetic design with health monitoring functionality.

The Gem retails for $300, though early adopters can purchase it for $200 during the launch period. This pricing puts it in direct competition with other premium wearables while offering specialized UV tracking that could appeal to health-conscious consumers concerned about sun exposure year-round.
