Epic CEO silenced until 2032

Epic Games and Google have settled their legal battle, but the deal reportedly includes a clause that will prevent CEO Tim Sweeney from criticizing the tech giant until September 30, 2032. The settlement requires Epic and Sweeney to speak positively about Google's app store operations and make "good faith efforts to advocate" for them.

The settlement follows years of conflict between the companies, with Sweeney previously calling both Apple and Google "gangster-style businesses." Epic filed its lawsuit in 2020, accusing Google of maintaining an illegal monopoly on app distribution and billing services for Android devices. After losing the case and its appeal, Google agreed to reform its business practices.

As part of the agreement, Google reduced its Play Store transaction fee from 30 percent to 20% or 15% in some cases. In return, Epic is bringing Fortnite back to the Play Store worldwide. The settlement effectively silences one of tech's most vocal critics of app store practices for nearly a decade.
