Epic Rejects Apple Settlement, Google Deal Sparks Hypocrisy Claims

Epic Games shows no interest in compromising with Apple over their ongoing legal dispute, despite claiming it wants to participate "in good faith." Apple recently shared its latest proposed commission rates in an attempt to reach a settlement, but Epic dismissed them immediately. While Apple suggested a settlement conference should take place, Epic's response implied the company didn't believe Apple was being serious in its filings. However, Epic stated it would participate if the court ordered such a conference.

The attitude has been consistent throughout the Apple lawsuit, but Epic seemingly accepted a deal quickly during its Google settlement. Epic paid Google $800 million over six years to promote Fortnite on its platforms, a move that raised questions about the company's principles. Epic claims it will "entertain any direct approach from Apple with a serious settlement proposal that would introduce competition and benefit all developers."

The proposed rates from Apple start at 5% for the small business program and go up to 15% for external purchases, which are lower than Google's rates in most instances. Epic takes 12% of all revenue generated from profits over $1 million. The continued legal battle raises questions about Epic CEO Tim Sweeney's motivations, as the company faces accusations of hypocrisy for its different approaches to settling with tech giants. The case may continue until the Supreme Court makes a decision in October.
