Epic pays Google $800M in antitrust settlement

Epic Games will pay Google $800 million as part of a new partnership settlement, ending their long-running antitrust lawsuit. The court revealed the deal, which includes multi-year commitments for joint product development and marketing. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney previously claimed the lawsuit aimed to help all developers, not just Epic's interests.

This settlement directly contradicts Epic's public stance against Google Play fees and its 'fight for developers' narrative. The deal requires Epic to promote Android in exchange for Google marketing Fortnite, effectively abandoning its previous criticisms. Judge James Donato described it as 'a new business between Epic and Google,' noting the irony of Epic paying its accuser.

The agreement may still require court approval, though Epic argues it doesn't grant special treatment. Meanwhile, Google has reportedly agreed to cap its App Store fees at 9% or 20% and simplify rival store installations. This outcome questions the effectiveness of antitrust remedies when opposing parties settle privately, potentially setting a precedent for future Big Tech disputes.
