Claude's New Memory Import Tool Rivals ChatGPT

Anthropic has launched a memory import tool that lets users transfer their AI chatbot conversations from competitors like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot directly into Claude. The tool extracts memories and context into a text prompt that users can copy and paste into Claude's memory system. Anthropic says the AI will take about 24 hours to assimilate the new context, with users able to verify the changes through a dedicated button.

Users can also manage what Claude remembers through the app's settings, with the company emphasizing that Claude focuses on "work-related topics to enhance its effectiveness as a collaborator." The tool represents a significant move to lower switching costs for users considering alternatives to established AI chatbots. This comes as Claude recently claimed the number one spot in the App Store's free apps charts, dethroning ChatGPT.

The timing appears strategic, following Anthropic's high-profile dispute with the Department of Defense over AI guardrails related to mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. While OpenAI stepped in to fill Anthropic's vacated role with the DoD, leading to user boycotts of ChatGPT, Anthropic's principled stance seems to be paying off in market share. The memory import feature could accelerate this trend by making it easier than ever for users to migrate their AI relationships.
