Apple Music to Mandate AI Disclosure Labels in 2026

Apple Music will require record labels and distributors to include AI Transparency Tags for content "materially generated" with artificial intelligence, effective later in 2026. The change marks a shift from the optional disclosure system introduced in March 2026.

In an email to content distributors, Apple stated that "content providers will be required to include AI Transparency Tags in any instance where AI was used to create a material portion of the content, including tracks that are AI platform generated." While enforcement methods remain unclear, Apple aims to provide listeners with greater transparency.

Apple Music VP Oliver Schusser revealed that over a third of uploaded songs are fully AI-generated, yet listening remains below 0.5%. The company has developed in-house tools to detect AI-made tracks, combat spam, and prevent impersonation, redistributing royalties from approximately 2 billion manipulated streams in 2025.

Unlike competitors, Apple has not yet made AI tags visible to end users. Deezer has employed AI-detection systems for over a year, catching 60,000 AI-generated songs daily. Spotify will introduce AI Persona badges in mid-September 2026, allowing artists to self-disclose or face automatic labeling based on listener thresholds.
