Apple is rolling out new metadata tags to help identify AI-generated content on Apple Music. The company will require labels when artificial intelligence was used to create music, artwork, or music videos, according to an email sent to partners. The move aims to bring greater transparency as generative technology reshapes creative industries.

Four distinct tag types will be available: Artwork, Track, Composition, and Music Video. These correspond to different creative elements, from album artwork to sound recordings and lyrics. Partners will decide what qualifies as AI-generated content, similar to how they already handle genres and credits. The tags apply when AI creates a material portion of the content, and multiple tags can be used together.

This initiative marks Apple's first major step toward AI content disclosure in music streaming. The company updated its Apple Music Package Specification alongside the announcement. As generative AI becomes more prevalent in music production, these tags will help listeners understand how their favorite songs and albums were created.
