Music Groups Seek AI Labels on Spotify and Apple Music

A coalition led by the Recording Industry Association of America and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry is urging streaming services to label tracks that use artificial intelligence. The proposal calls for two tags: one for songs fully generated by AI and another for tracks where AI assisted human creators. Labels would appear like existing explicit-content warnings and would not yet cover AI use in lyrics, composition, videos or artwork.

The groups say fans want transparency about whether they are hearing a real person or an algorithm. RIAA chief Mitch Glazier noted that while listeners are open to AI music, they desire clear disclosure. He also stressed that artists who wish to use AI should retain the freedom to do so, with labeling serving as a neutral tool.

Streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music are already filtering what they describe as a flood of low-quality AI-generated tracks. The initiative aims to give listeners clearer information, which could influence consumption patterns and platform policies as AI-generated music grows in volume.
