tvOS 27 Drops Support for Apple TV HD and Original 4K Models

Apple's upcoming tvOS 27 will abandon the longest-running hardware support in the platform's history, leaving behind the Apple TV HD from 2015 and first-generation Apple TV 4K released in 2017. These streaming devices can no longer upgrade to the new operating system, marking the first major compatibility cutoff since 2022.

The Apple TV HD received major tvOS updates for nearly ten years, while its 4K predecessor lasted about eight years. Apple typically maintains longer support cycles than most competitors, so this change signals they're prioritizing newer hardware capabilities over legacy compatibility. Users with older models will miss out on upcoming features and security patches.

Only the second-generation Apple TV 4K (2021) and both third-generation models (2022) remain compatible with tvOS 27. Owners can check their model number in Settings > General > About to confirm eligibility. Older hardware can be identified by their USB-C port and original black Siri Remote with glass touch surface.

This move likely reflects Apple's focus on newer processors and features that older chips cannot support efficiently. For consumers, it means upgrading to newer hardware for continued software support, while the industry watches whether this signals tighter hardware requirements for future Apple services.
