Apple Drops Support for 16 Devices This Fall

Apple will end software support for 16 devices this fall across four product lines, with the Apple Watch seeing the most sweeping cull in the product's history.

At WWDC, Apple revealed that watchOS 27 will drop the Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, first‑generation Ultra and second‑generation SE, forcing users to upgrade to an S9 or S10 chip. The move marks the biggest loss of recent‑generation support for the watch.

The iPadOS 27 update raises the minimum requirement to an A14 Bionic or M1 chip, eliminating the iPad Air (3rd gen), iPad Pro 12.9‑inch (3rd gen), iPad Pro 11‑inch (1st gen), iPad (8th gen) and iPad mini (5th gen). Apple’s macOS 27 Golden Gate ends Intel‑based Mac support, removing the 2019‑16‑inch MacBook Pro, 2020‑13‑inch MacBook Pro, 2020 iMac and 2019 Mac Pro.

Apple TV support shrinks to only second‑ and third‑generation 4K models, dropping the 2015 HD and 2017 4K units. Owners of affected devices will receive security patches for at least a year on the previous OS, but new features require newer hardware.
