Long before Weibo rumors, the "Mac Week" journal was an indispensable read in the '80s and '90s for anyone wondering if the Mac or Apple itself would survive. Published by Ziff Davis from 1987 until about 1998, it covered product announcements, company news, and insider gossip. Now, 183 editions are available on the Internet Archive, including the first issue.

In the 1990s, UK publisher Ziff Davis provided Mac Week to its staff, including features editors in London. The weekly publication, roughly 140 pages, featured articles by notable figures like Andy Hertzfeld, who wrote about Apple's creative culture in 1988. However, readers primarily tuned in for "Mac The Knife," the byline for controversial stories Apple management didn't want publicized.

These technical gossip columns broke significant stories, such as a rumored hidden image in a Mac's ROM. The Internet Archive collection ends at the November 11, 1996 edition, missing some later tales. Ziff Davis eventually discontinued Mac Week, citing faster online news sources like the early Apple Insider.

It briefly relaunched as e Media Weekly in 1998 but never recaptured its former glory. The magazine's decline reflected broader changes in both Apple and publishing. Despite its end, Mac Week remains a nostalgic treasure, with its ads and articles offering a window into computing history.

As one editor noted, receiving it weekly in London was a highlight, contrasting with delayed deliveries to subscribers like military personnel.
