Author David Pogue discussed his new book 'Apple: The First 50 Years' in a revealing interview with AppleInsider, sharing insights about Apple's cooperation and the surprising stories he uncovered. Pogue, known for his 'Missing Manual' series and years writing for MacWorld, spent months researching Apple's history, interviewing key figures from Steve Jobs to Phil Schiller.

One of the most surprising revelations involves how Apple's investment in ARM chips nearly saved the company from bankruptcy in the 1990s. Former CEO John Sculley's $3 million investment in the British chip company eventually grew to $800 million, providing crucial funding that allowed Gil Amelio to acquire NeXT and bring Steve Jobs back to Apple. Pogue also debunked several famous Apple myths, including the story about Jobs throwing an iPod prototype into a fish tank.

Despite extensive access to former executives and engineers, Tim Cook declined to be interviewed for the book, though he later spoke with Pogue for a CBS Sunday Morning segment. Pogue suggests Apple's reluctance stemmed from their policy of not celebrating the past, though he notes they did provide archivist access and interviews with other executives. The author describes the project as 'stressful' due to conflicting accounts from interviewees and the immovable April 1, 2026 deadline tied to Apple's anniversary.
