A newly-revealed patent suggests Apple is considering adding a Camera Control button to a future iPad. The patent, titled 'Input System for Portable Electronic Device,' describes a button that can be pressed, tapped, or swiped, mirroring the functionality introduced with the iPhone 16 in 2024. Despite rumors that the button might be dropped entirely, this patent indicates Apple has previously explored expanding its use beyond iPhones. The document includes detailed drawings of tablets and explains how the control uses two strain sensing elements to detect different types of input, such as light taps or full presses, with specific force thresholds ranging from 0.8 to 1.2 Newtons for touch and 3.0 to 4.0 Newtons for deeper presses. Haptic feedback is triggered in certain pressure ranges. While patents don't guarantee product releases, the level of detail implies serious consideration. As iPad photography becomes more common, adding such a control could enhance the user experience for camera functions.

The patent also references an earlier version from December 2025, showing ongoing development. Apple files hundreds of patents annually, so this doesn't confirm an imminent release. However, it does reflect a potential shift toward treating the iPad as a more capable photography tool. If consumer demand supports it, Apple may eventually integrate the Camera Control button into its iPad lineup, aligning tablet and phone camera interfaces.

This move would mark another step in Apple's effort to unify hardware features across devices, making the iPad a stronger competitor in mobile photography and content creation.
