The company has filed numerous patents exploring features like color detection and texture sensing, but a newly-granted patent reveals Apple is now focusing on the physical feel of the stylus.

According to the patent titled 'Stylus with adjustable features,' the Apple Pencil could alter its shape, stiffness, flexibility, and friction to mimic characteristics of various writing and drawing tools. The device might use magnetorheological fluids that change viscosity in response to magnetic fields, or adjust its center of gravity by moving internal components. Some designs show tips that could spread out or split open to better simulate paintbrushes.

The research represents Apple's most extensive work on transforming the Apple Pencil from a simple stylus into a dynamic tool that physically adapts to different creative tasks. With 31 diagrams and over 16,000 words dedicated to the concept, Apple appears committed to making the stylus feel more like traditional art implements while maintaining its tight integration with iPad and iPhone devices.
