iOS 26 CarPlay Video Playback: What You Need to Know

Apple has reversed its decade-long stance against video playback in CarPlay, introducing 'video in the car' support with iOS 26. The feature allows iPhone users to watch videos through CarPlay displays when parked, marking a significant shift from Apple's previous policy. This capability was first mentioned on Apple's developer site for CarPlay, which explains how AirPlay video enables video playback through the CarPlay screen.

Developers and automakers must now navigate the MFi Program to implement this functionality. The change comes after a third-party app briefly offered CarPlay video playback through App Store review in April 2025 before being removed. While iOS 26 technically enables the feature, its availability remains uncertain since each automaker controls whether to allow AirPlay video in their vehicles.

Apple has also enhanced CarPlay with redesigned icons, appearance options, widget support, and updates to Music and Messages. However, as of February 2026, no automakers have publicly committed to supporting video playback through CarPlay while parked. This means consumers may not see the feature implemented anytime soon, despite the technical capability now existing in iOS 26.
