Suno, an AI music generator, is implementing audio watermarking to identify songs created on its platform. This move comes amid increasing pressure from the music industry and ongoing legal battles concerning AI-generated music.

Suno co-founder and CEO Mikey Shulman announced "transparency tools" that will include a labelling system to indicate if a song was generated by Suno. The company plans to use "new audio watermarking and fingerprinting technology" to combat AI fraud more effectively, similar in principle to Google's Synth ID.

In addition to watermarking, Suno will introduce download limits to curb mass distribution and potential fraud. These measures follow demands from major music labels, including Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group, to disqualify AI-generated tracks flooding music charts. Recent lawsuits have accused AI music companies like Suno of copyright infringement by training models on unauthorized music. Despite a recent agreement with Warner Music, a German court ruled against Suno regarding copyright violations, a decision the company may appeal.

Suno is collaborating with companies like Audible Magic and Musixmatch to screen audio and lyrics for misuse.
