CarPlay to support video playback with iOS 27

Apple announced at WWDC 2026 that CarPlay will soon allow users to browse and play videos directly on supported vehicles with the arrival of iOS 27. This feature, designed for when the car is stationary, aims to entertain users during charging stops or while waiting.

Developers can integrate video playback into their CarPlay apps, utilizing AirPlay streaming introduced in iOS 26.4. The interface will display video thumbnails, a mini-player, and full-screen playback options with standard controls. However, video functionality is strictly limited to parked vehicles for safety reasons.

While video mirroring to CarPlay has existed since iOS 26.4, native browsing and playback in iOS 27 represent a significant advancement. The rollout of this feature depends heavily on automakers implementing the necessary hardware and software support, as well as detecting when the vehicle is parked. To date, no automakers have officially announced support, suggesting a potentially delayed wide availability despite Google's similar advancements with Android Auto.
