Apple Lets CarPlay Show Video While Parked in iOS 26

Apple flips a decade‑long rule on its head: starting with iOS 26, the company now lets apps stream video to a CarPlay screen while the vehicle is parked. The move, dubbed “video in the car,” follows a 2023 developer note that AirPlay video could appear on the dashboard when the driver isn’t behind the wheel. The shift opens a new playground for media makers and carmakers alike.

For developers, the announcement points to Apple’s MFi Program, which now includes CarPlay Ultra, AirPlay video, and car‑key integration. Earlier this year a third‑party app slipped a CarPlay web browser with video playback through App Store review, only to have the feature pulled back. The change means that, even with iOS 26, real‑world support hinges on automaker cooperation.

At present, no commercial apps offer the feature. The closest testbed is Apple’s CarPlay Simulator app on macOS, which embeds an Apple TV app and lets users play iPhone videos via Safari on iOS 26.4 and 26.5. The simulator hints that a 1920×1080 resolution is required, suggesting strict hardware constraints.

Because the function relies on automaker‑level support, no manufacturers have announced plans to enable it yet. Until a car maker opts in, users will likely remain stuck watching content on their phone screens instead of the large dashboard display. CarPlay video playback stays a promise rather than a practical reality.
