iCloud Sync Frustrations: Why Apple Needs Dropbox's 'Sync Next' Feature

Apple's iCloud service continues to frustrate users with unreliable synchronization speeds, even for those with premium 2TB storage plans. While Dropbox offers near-instantaneous file syncing, iCloud can take minutes, hours, or even days to sync documents between devices. One writer reports a Scrivener document failing to sync from a MacBook Air for over 12 hours, despite having a similarly sized Dropbox account that works flawlessly.

Dropbox's Mac app includes a simple solution: right-click a file and select 'Sync Next' or 'Sync Now' to prioritize uploads. This feature proves especially useful when transferring large video files from camera systems like Blackmagic. The workaround addresses both routine uploads and rare sync failures. iCloud, however, offers no equivalent functionality on the Mac platform.

Users resort to clunky fixes like signing out of iCloud, force-quitting apps, or restarting their Macs. While Apple should ideally match Dropbox's reliability, a basic 'sync now' feature would at least give users control over frustrating delays. The decade-long persistence of this complaint suggests Apple needs to address iCloud's fundamental synchronization issues before users abandon the service entirely.
