Apple's MacBook Neo Chip Shortage: How Apple Could Fix It

Apple is facing a significant chip supply problem with its popular MacBook Neo, which has sold far better than expected. The company is struggling to source enough binned A18 Pro chips to meet demand for the next 6-12 months before the next model release.

Some analysts suggest Apple could drop the 256GB configuration and use unbinned A18 Pro chips in the 512GB model. However, to prevent future shortages, Apple may need to diversify its chip strategy for the upcoming A19 Pro version. The current MacBook Neo comes in two configurations: a $599 model with 256GB SSD and a $699 model with 512GB SSD, both using the same A18 Pro chip.

For the A19 Pro refresh, Apple could introduce three distinct configurations: a $599 base model with the standard A19 chip, a $749 mid-tier with the A19 Pro chip, and a $899 high-end version with enhanced GPU capabilities. This approach would provide chip supply diversity while creating new incentives for buyers at different price points. The strategy could help Apple maintain adequate inventory levels while continuing to compete effectively in the Chromebook and low-end Windows laptop markets.
