MacBook Neo Success Spurs Chip Shortage Dilemma for Apple

Apple's surprise success with the new MacBook Neo has created a manufacturing headache, according to reports. The machine relies on a 'binned' 5-core GPU version of the A18 Pro chip, originally reserved for discarded chips with a faulty 6-core GPU. Demand is now outpacing the supply of these specialized components.

To maintain production volume, Apple might be forced into an undesirable choice: intentionally disabling a core on fully functional A18 Pro chips. This measure, while ensuring product availability, directly pressures profit margins on the popular laptop. Meanwhile, rumors persist regarding the iPhone 18 Pro, suggesting only one Face ID component will move under the display, resulting in a smaller Dynamic Island.

Beyond hardware headaches, Apple pushed out iOS and iPadOS 26.4.1, patching an iCloud sync bug and enabling Stolen Device Protection for more users. CarPlay also saw updates, integrating popular third-party tools like ChatGPT and Google Meet into vehicle dashboards, enhancing in-car utility.

Separately, the much-anticipated foldable phone may launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro under the moniker iPhone Ultra, with pricing expected near or above $2,000. A new Apple TV refresh also seems delayed for months, held up by necessary Siri feature integration.
