Apple Wallet Driver's License Support Coming to Virginia

Apple appears ready to expand its Wallet driver's license feature to Virginia, according to a MacRumors report citing an unnamed source familiar with the plans. This follows the recent Arkansas rollout and would make Virginia the 15th state plus Puerto Rico to support the digital ID system. The Virginia DMV previously indicated future support but never specified timing.

The gradual state-by-state expansion has been ongoing since Apple first launched the feature in 2022. Current supported locations include Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia. Several other states including Kentucky, Mississippi, Utah, Connecticut, and Oklahoma have committed to adopting the technology.

Digital IDs in Apple Wallet currently work at over 250 TSA checkpoints nationwide, plus select venues, businesses, and online services. Users can present their digital license at security checkpoints or during in-person transactions where accepted. The system uses encrypted storage and requires biometric authentication.

However, Apple's recent passport-based Digital ID feature launched last year reduces the urgency of state-by-state adoption. Users with valid US passports can create digital IDs regardless of their home state's support status, making the rollout less critical for individual consumers than it once was.
