Apple has removed an AI-powered app called Kromix from the App Store after it was found to generate pornographic deepfakes of real people, including a woman resembling a prominent US politician.

According to WIRED, Meta ran a campaign for Kromix, promoting it as "the AI that men actually use" with no restrictions. One ad featured an AI-generated deepfake of a woman resembling a prominent female US politician in front of a US flag, followed by explicit content.

Apple stated that Kromix appeared to add prohibited features after passing the App Store's initial review. The company emphasized that nudification apps violate their App Review Guidelines and that they actively remove such apps and developer accounts attempting to evade policies.

Following WIRED's investigation, Meta also removed the campaign consisting of 32 ads exclusively targeted at male users. This incident follows similar actions last month when San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu demanded removal of eight nudify apps. WIRED also found Meta running problematic ads for another app, Mask AI, which Apple subsequently removed.

Both companies took action only after being contacted by the publication.
