Meta Ran Ads With AI-Generated CSAM

Over the past nine months, Meta has displayed numerous paid ads containing explicit AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and sexually suggestive images of minors. These ads, discovered by researchers at the Tech Transparency Project (TTP), appeared on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads, targeting users in the US, UK, and several European countries.

Some of these ads linked to "nudify" or undressing apps. Katie Paul, director of TTP, stated that these ads were reviewed, approved, and run by Meta, with the company collecting revenue from them. The ads, which ran between November and August, have since been removed by Meta for violating policies on child sexual abuse and exploitation.

One video ad featured a thumbnail of a child with text promoting "Deep Fantasies with Generation AI," leading to clips of adults in sexual acts with the child's face superimposed. While many ads had minimal reach, at least one reached 2,563 accounts in Europe. Meta claims to have removed millions of pieces of CSAM and is improving its AI detection systems.
