Former Australia captain Steve Waugh has emerged as a key investor in the men's European T20 Premier League (ETPL), set to launch later this year with city-based teams in Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands. Waugh leads the Amsterdam Flames, backed by former Australian field hockey player Jamie Dwyer and businessman Tim Thomas. The team has already signed high-profile players Steve Smith and Mitch Marsh, indicating a strong start for the franchise.

The ETPL, initially planned for 2025, faced delays due to incomplete franchise sales. However, deals for three franchises have now been finalized, with investors from Australia and New Zealand securing their stakes. Each franchise was sold for £11.1m ($15m) over a 10-year period, with teams having a total salary budget of £1.1m ($1.5m) per season. The tournament begins on August 26 and is sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The ETPL aims to boost cricket's development in Europe, with teams required to have at least seven European players. This move is seen as a significant step forward for cricket in the region, particularly for Ireland and Scotland. The tournament's success will depend on attracting top talent and ensuring a seamless experience for players and fans alike. As the first ball approaches, all eyes will be on how this new league shapes up against existing T20 competitions.
