West Indies icon Chris Gayle has joined Glasgow’s new T20 outfit as co‑owner, partnering with India‑based Mugafi Group. The team will compete as the Glasgow Mugafians in the European T20 Premier League that kicks off this summer. Gayle’s move follows a stalled bid by a group headed by Rahul Dravid and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Franchise sales for the league totalled £11.1m over a decade, a figure that positioned the Glasgow side among the most valuable. Mugafi Group’s entertainment background is expected to energise fan engagement, while Gayle’s 103‑Test, 301‑ODI, 79‑T20 experience brings credibility to the fledgling competition. The move is part of a strategy to expand cricket’s footprint across Europe, aligning with boards from Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.

Gayle said the league offers a platform to uncover local talent and nurture future heroes. “Europe represents cricket’s final frontier,” he noted, adding he looks forward to the competition starting 26 August. The tournament will run until 20 September, featuring teams based in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The shift from the Dravid‑Ashwin consortium to Gayle and Mugafi Group signals a pivot toward celebrity ownership and commercial appeal. Fans in Glasgow can now anticipate a high‑profile franchise that blends star power with local ambition, potentially reshaping the European T20 landscape and setting a benchmark for future expansions.
