Serena Williams Nears Tennis Comeback at Queen's Club in Doubles

Serena Williams is discussing a potential return to competitive tennis at Queen's Club next month, four years after stepping away from the sport. The 44-year-old would play doubles at the WTA 500 event in London, requiring a wildcard for the grass court tournament starting June 8. BBC Sport has not confirmed reports she might partner 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko.

Williams completed her six-month drug testing pool requirement on February 22, making her eligible to return. She won 23 Grand Slam singles titles and 14 major women's doubles crowns with sister Venus. The American prefers saying she was "evolving away" from tennis rather than retired, after losing to Ajla Tomljanovic at the 2022 US Open.

Her comeback follows public discussions about dramatic weight loss - 31lb over eight months - while training for a half-marathon. Williams recently became a spokesperson for Ro, a company selling GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. The Lawn Tennis Association typically prioritizes British players for wildcards but acknowledged "exceptional circumstances" could warrant a unique decision.

Two doubles wildcards exist for Queen's, one reserved for teams featuring a former world No. 1 or recent Grand Slam champion. LTA officials suggested commercial opportunities might influence their decision, potentially clearing the way for one of tennis's greatest champions to return on home soil.
