Burnley striker Lyle Foster earned a place in South Africa’s 26‑man World Cup squad, becoming the sole player plying his trade in England. The Bafana Bafana side assemble under 74‑year‑old Belgian coach Hugo Broos as they chase a return to the tournament proper for the first time since the 2010 home edition. Foster’s inclusion adds significant Premier League experience to a largely domestic roster.

Twenty‑nine of the squad hail from clubs in the South African Premier Division, with only Foster representing a foreign league. Uncapped defenders Olwethu Makhanya and Bradley Cross, a former Newcastle United academy product, also make the list, highlighting Hugo Broos’ willingness to blend youth and experience. The coach confirmed he will step down after the tournament, ending a long tenure.

South Africa open the competition on 11 June against co‑hosts Mexico in Mexico City, then face the Czech Republic in Atlanta and South Korea in Monterrey. A mixed roster of Premier League, MLS and European‑based players reflects the nation’s expanding talent pool. The Bafana Bafana will look to advance beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010.
