Mark Hughes has departed Carlisle United by mutual agreement after the Cumbrians' 2-1 home loss to Boreham Wood in the National League semi‑final. The former Manchester United striker, who took charge in February 2025, could not reverse the club's relegation from League Two in his debut season. Chairman Tom Piatak praised Hughes' professionalism and the standards he set.

Carlisle finished third with a club‑record 95 points, forcing a play‑off route despite dominating the regular season. Hughes inherited a side still reeling from last‑season relegation and was tasked with an instant return to League Two. His résumé includes spells with Wales, Manchester City and Blackburn, but his only recent coaching stint was a brief, troubled spell at Bradford City.

First‑team coach Frankie McAvoy also exited, leaving both senior positions vacant. The club said a new head‑coach announcement will follow “in due course,” with former Gateshead keeper Rob Elliot among those linked to the role. The board expects the appointment to restore the momentum built during the record‑breaking campaign. Carlisle now faces a critical hiring decision that will shape its push for promotion next season.
