Russia Athletes Return to Paralympics After Ban Lifted

Ten athletes from Russia and Belarus will compete under their national flags at the upcoming Winter Paralympics in Milan-Cortina, marking the first time since 2014 that the Russian flag will be displayed at the Games. The International Paralympic Committee lifted its ban on athletes from both countries in September 2024, reversing a suspension imposed after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

While the IPC allowed their return, four individual sport governing bodies initially maintained their own bans. Russia and Belarus successfully appealed against the skiing and snowboarding ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in December, enabling their participation. The IPC confirmed that NPC Russia received six slots across Para-alpine skiing, Para-cross country skiing, and Para-snowboarding, while NPC Belarus earned four slots in cross-country skiing.

Among the athletes set to compete are three-time Paralympic champion Aleksey Bugaev in alpine skiing and World Championship medallists Ivan Golubkov and Anastasiia Bagiian in cross-country skiing. All three have returned to competition this season, with Bugaev and Bagiian winning World Cup titles. The Milan-Cortina Winter Paralympics will run from March 6-15, 2025.
