MI London takeover: What the change means for The Hundred

In January 2025, Mumbai Indians bought a 49% stake in Oval Invincibles for about £60m, rebranding the team as MI London and bringing the Ambani family's cricket empire to The Oval. The move marked the first sale of a Hundred franchise.

Surrey chief executive Steve Elworthy said the partnership had roots that pre‑dated the bidding process. The Oval’s iconic status, combined with five titles across men’s and women’s competitions and high attendances, made it an attractive proposition for the Indian owners, who already own MI Cape Town, MI Emirates and MI New York.

For players, the change felt smooth. England all‑rounder Will Jacks noted the kit now mixes MI blue and gold with Invincibles colours, while coaching saw Kieron Pollard replace Tom Moody and Mitchell Mc Clenaghan join as men’s bowling coach. A strong Surrey presence remains with Gareth Batty, Jim Troughton and Nic Pothas.

Elworthy plans to turn MI London into a year‑round brand and to take more control over operations from 2027. The ambition on the field remains unchanged: after five titles in as many years, the focus is on producing more silverware‑winning teams while expanding the franchise’s global reach.
