Mark Wood eyes summer return after knee surgery

Mark Wood, England’s fastest bowler, is eyeing a return to the crease this summer after a knee operation that curtailed his Ashes outing. The 36‑year‑old underwent surgery on his left knee in March 2025 and made a brief comeback in the first Test against Australia, delivering only 11 overs before injury forced him out of the series.

Wood’s career has been marred by a string of knocks. Prior to the Ashes he sat out 15 months, first with an elbow injury and then the knee problem that now dominates his fitness talks. He admitted to pondering life after cricket if the rehabilitation stalls, a rare admission from a front‑line pace bowler today.

England’s pace unit now faces uncertainty. If Wood cannot return to Test level, he would join Anderson, Broad, and Woakes as the last of the four mainstays on the long‑format roster. Their combined 1,619 wickets will have to be replaced by a new core, raising questions about the squad’s future strategy in the season ahead.

With England set to open the home summer against New Zealand on 4 June, Wood’s status remains a concern. The squad also grapples with Jofra Archer’s IPL return and Brydon Carse’s wrist injury, while younger talents like Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson eye spots. The selectors must balance recovery and depth for the team through the season.
