Championship adopts tighter salary cap from 2027

The Rugby Football League announced that Championship clubs for lower‑division teams will adopt a stricter salary cap from the 2027 season. The move follows recent financial crises at Featherstone, Halifax and North Wales Crusaders, which exposed unsustainable spending patterns. RFL chair Nigel Wood said the new rules aim to protect well‑run clubs while still allowing ambitious sides to grow.

Wood warned that unchecked expenditure has repeatedly led clubs into liquidation or forced licence rescues. Under the new framework each club’s cap will be tied to its turnover, with the league reviewing accounts through June and offering transition arrangements for existing contracts. Clubs may request a higher limit, but must pass a five‑stage test covering tax arrears, pension debts and RFL board approval.

The proposal also caps overseas players at seven for 2027, dropping to five in 2028, tightening a rule that previously had no limit. By linking spending to revenue, the league hopes clubs will maximise commercial streams rather than rely on debt. The RFL’s unanimous club support signals a decisive shift toward financial stability overall in the long term in the Championship.
