Amy Pu breaks barrier as UK’s first female pro boxing referee

Amy Pu, a Taiwan‑born official, became the first female professional referee in UK boxing when she stepped into the ring at York Hall in March 2024. The British Boxing Board of Control invited her to the professional ranks after a stint as an England Boxing amateur referee. Pu’s debut saw her oversee Marcus Eaton’s victory over Paul Scaife and three additional bouts on the same card.

Pu’s journey began in 2004 when she moved to London to study, later joining a gym for fitness and quickly rising through amateur competition to earn a referee licence in 2018. Her traditional Taiwanese family worried about safety and racism, but she reassured them that she would protect herself, noting the sport’s focus on the fighters, not the officials.

Since turning professional, Pu reports overwhelmingly supportive crowds and minimal gender‑based criticism, a stark contrast to occasional remarks during her amateur days. She now balances refereeing with work as a life coach and podcast host, eyeing higher‑profile undercards such as the Oleksandr Usyk‑Daniel Dubois bout at Wembley. Her presence offers a visible role model for aspiring female officials in a traditionally male‑dominated arena.
