Traditionally, the Carabao Cup begins midweek after the opening league fixtures. However, following discussions with EFL clubs, the decision was made to shift the first round to the weekend before the league season commences. This adjustment aims to provide players with a more extended rest period.

While some weekend fixtures occurred in past years like 2020 and 2021, this is the first full round of weekend fixtures, excluding the final, this century. The early start was prompted by Bristol City's first-round match against Walsall.
