James Arminio, a Gloucester sprinter, is competing at the Under-20 World Championships in Eugene, just two years after first stepping onto an athletics track. Having previously played football without serious commitment, Arminio discovered his speed through sixth form in 2024. His school invited him to compete against county athletes, leading to a regional championships qualification and a move to Gloucester Athletics Club under coach Justin Smith.

With consistent training, Arminio's sprint times improved significantly, culminating in his first Great Britain representation earlier this summer. "Constantly seeing improvements gives you motivation," he said, noting the decreasing race times as proof of progress. At the start of the season, he and his coach set their sights on the U20 World Championships, making it his primary goal.

Despite being early in his career, Arminio remains focused on development. "It would be nice to win, but with the level of competition, it's going to take a lot," he added. His aim is to achieve a personal best, enjoy the experience, and learn from fellow competitors to grow in future.
