Werder Bremen Cancels US Trip Over ICE Shooting Fears

Bundesliga club Werder Bremen has cancelled a planned trip to the United States, citing safety concerns following fatal shootings by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Minnesota. The German team had scheduled friendly matches in Minnesota and Detroit for May but abandoned the tour after two American citizens were killed during 'Operation Metro Surge' last month.

A club spokesman told BBC Sport that the Trump administration's immigration crackdown was among several factors in the decision. The team expressed concern about playing in a city experiencing unrest and uncertainty about which players could enter the US under tightened visa rules. The spokesman emphasized that playing in a location where people had been shot did not align with the club's values.

Bundesliga struggles also influenced the decision, with Werder currently 16th in the 18-team table and without a win in their past 12 matches. The club faces potential relegation and must focus on survival rather than international friendlies. The spokesman noted sporting challenges and economic risks made the trip impractical at this critical juncture in their season.
