Suarez Opens Door to World Cup Return After 19‑Month Hiatus

Former Uruguay striker Luis Suarez said he would never refuse a call‑up for the World Cup if the nation needs him. The 39‑year‑old withdrew from international duty in September 2024 after criticizing coach Marcelo Bielsa, but his recent statement signals a possible comeback after a 19‑month absence. Suarez’s offer comes as Uruguay prepares for the 2026 tournament in North America.

Suarez’s international résumé includes 69 goals in 143 caps and four World Cups since 2010. He famously stopped a Ghana goal with a handball in 2010 and faced a four‑month ban for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini in 2014. Now plying his trade with Inter Miami, the forward says he still craves competition and feels he has more to give.

With Uruguay secured fourth in South American qualifying, the national team will open the 2026 World Cup against Saudi Arabia in Miami on 15 June. Suarez’s willingness to return could add firepower to a squad already bolstered by Bielsa’s experienced coaching. If he re‑joins, the 70‑year‑old coach will have a veteran striker who can change the outcome of tight matches.
