Uruguay's Football Association (AUF) is in advanced talks with Diego Forlán to become interim head coach of the national team. The 47-year-old would replace Marcelo Bielsa, who stepped down after Uruguay's group-stage exit at the World Cup.

AUF president Diego Alonso confirmed Forlán is "excited" for the challenge, which includes overseeing six friendlies in September, October, and November while also managing the under-20 side. A permanent manager will be appointed after federation elections late this year or in early 2027.

Forlán retired in 2019 after stints at Manchester United, Atlético Madrid, and Inter Milan. He scored 36 goals in 112 appearances for Uruguay and won the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup when La Celeste reached the semifinals. His coaching experience is limited to brief spells at Peñarol and Atenas, with no role since 2021.

Uruguay drew with Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia before losing to Spain in their final group match. Reports indicated tension between players and Bielsa throughout the tournament, whose three-year contract expired with the team's exit.
