Luis Suárez has left the door open to returning to the Uruguay national team for the 2026 World Cup, despite retiring from international duty in September 2024. The 39-year-old Inter Miami forward told Uruguayan publication Diario Ovación he would "never say no" to representing his country if called upon.

Suárez stepped away as Uruguay's all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 143 appearances across 17 years. He explained his initial retirement decision was to make way for younger players, but admitted the passion for football has "dimmed a little" since leaving the national team. "I retired because I felt that a moment had arrived when I could no longer be of use to the squad," Suárez said.

The veteran striker recently scored his first goal of the 2026 MLS season in Saturday's 2-2 draw against Austin FC. Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano praised Suárez's performance, noting he "played a key role in securing the equalizer" and created multiple scoring chances. Suárez and Inter Miami face the New York Red Bulls on Saturday as he continues to balance club commitments with potential national team considerations.
