Michael O'Neill has signed a new contract to remain as Northern Ireland manager until 2032, rejecting a full‑time role at Blackburn Rovers. The 56‑year‑old had two years left on his existing deal and faced a choice between extending his 11‑year tenure and taking the Ewood Park job. He opted to stay with the IFA, citing loyalty to the squad.

O'Neill praised the IFA’s “great offer” and highlighted the chance to develop a young core featuring Conor Bradley, Trai Hume and the Charles brothers. He recalled steering the side to Euro 2016 and now has three qualifying cycles to deliver another finals appearance. Contract clauses protect both parties, but his focus remains on the upcoming friendlies against Guinea and France.

The manager stressed that club duties at Blackburn left little room for academy work, whereas his role with Northern Ireland allows collaboration with director of football Aaron Hughes and academy chief Andrew Waterworth. Plans for a new national training centre at Galgorm aim for a 2028 opening, reinforcing his long‑term vision. O'Neill’s contract extension locks in his leadership through the next World Cup cycle.
