Michael O'Neill has been appointed Blackburn Rovers head coach on a short-term arrangement, the club announced Friday. The 56-year-old Northern Ireland manager succeeds Valerien Ismael, who was sacked on February 2 after less than a year in charge at Ewood Park. O'Neill will continue managing Northern Ireland while taking on the Blackburn role.

Blackburn sits 22nd in the Sky Bet Championship, inside the relegation zone on goal difference with 15 games remaining. The club has won just one of its last 10 league matches, creating an urgent need for improvement. O'Neill previously managed Stoke City while simultaneously leading Northern Ireland during the first five months of his tenure there.

Northern Ireland faces Italy in a World Cup play-off semi-final next month, with a potential final against Wales or Bosnia-Herzegovina should they advance. O'Neill acknowledged the Irish FA's support in allowing him to take the opportunity, calling Blackburn a historic Premier League-winning club. His immediate focus will be helping the team climb the Championship table during the season's final stretch, with fixtures against QPR, Preston, and Bristol City upcoming.
