Chelsea Star Chris Atherton Switches to Republic of Ireland

Chelsea academy midfielder Chris Atherton has switched his international allegiance from Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland, marking a significant development for both national teams. The 17-year-old, who became the UK's youngest senior footballer at 13 years and 329 days old during his time at Glenavon, made 32 appearances for the Lurgan club before joining Chelsea's academy in July 2025.

Atherton represented Northern Ireland at Under-16 and Under-17 levels, scoring one international goal, before making the switch. His move to Chelsea followed his record-breaking debut and came after signing a professional contract in October 2025. The teenager had previously served as a youth ambassador for Northern Ireland during the Euro 2028 bid announcement in October 2023, where the then-14-year-old expressed his dream of representing Northern Ireland at the tournament finals.

This decision represents a blow for Northern Ireland, who had used Atherton as a 'poster boy' for their Euro 2028 campaign. The switch follows a pattern of players like James McClean, Shane Duffy, and Darron Gibson making similar moves to the Republic of Ireland after starting with Northern Ireland. With other prospects like Ceadach O'Neill at Arsenal and George Feeney at Tottenham already playing across the water, Northern Ireland's youth development faces challenges in retaining top talent.
