Former Republic of Ireland international James McClean has signed a multi-year deal with Derry City, marking a homecoming after leaving Wrexham. The 36-year-old previously played for the Candystripes from 2008-2011, helping them win the League of Ireland First Division title in 2010 before a long career in England.

McClean’s return follows a successful spell at Wrexham, where he captained the side and helped them secure back-to-back promotions into the Championship. He brings a wealth of experience, including 103 caps for Ireland and an FA Cup win with Wigan in 2013, to a club aiming for its first league title since 1997.

His signing is a major statement of intent from Derry, who also added his brother Patrick McClean this week. McClean, who retired from international duty in 2023, is eager to help end the club’s 28-year title drought, stating he is "as fit as I’ve ever been" and motivated by the challenge.
