Mercedes to appeal Russell's Monaco penalty at FIA hearing

The FIA scheduled a hearing for Saturday after Mercedes lodged a Right of Review petition over the Monaco Grand Prix result and George Russell’s penalties. The request follows Alpine’s successful challenge that reinstated Pierre Gasly to the podium. Officials will first assess whether Mercedes has presented a “significant and relevant new element” before a second‑stage hearing proceeds for the sport and fans.

Russell originally received a five‑second pit‑lane speeding penalty, then a drive‑through after officials said the first sanction was not served correctly. The combined penalties dropped him from a points finish to zero, widening the gap to teammate Kimi Antonelli in the drivers’ championship. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff warned the appeal is unlikely to succeed but insisted the team must try.

The hearing’s outcome could reshape the provisional Monaco standings, which were already altered when the FIA admitted a timing‑system error that cleared Gasly’s penalties. McLaren has lodged a protest over Oscar Piastri’s demotion, and Red Bull is believed to be appealing Isack Hadjar’s lost podium. A ruling this weekend will finalize the race result and affect championship points.
