Mercedes Challenge FIA Decision to Reinstate Gasly's Monaco Result

Mercedes have formally requested a right of review from the FIA over Pierre Gasly's reinstated Monaco Grand Prix position. The Frenchman was initially demoted to seventh place after two five-second penalties for pit-lane speeding, but Alpine successfully appealed the decision. Stewards admitted an error in measuring the pit-lane speed limit, which incorrectly penalized five drivers including George Russell.

Russell dropped from third to 12th place after receiving a drive-through penalty, costing him 15 points in his championship battle with teammate Kimi Antonelli. The stewards' mistake involved calculating cars could legally drive a shorter distance than officials had measured. Since the 60km/h limit is based on time over a set distance, officials wrongly flagged drivers as speeding.

Toto Wolff acknowledged Mercedes consulted lawyers before submitting their review request, telling Sky Sports the team needed to act for Russell's benefit. Wolff admitted uncertainty about the appeal's chances but emphasized sitting at the decision-making table was essential. McLaren's Oscar Piastri, another penalized driver, expressed surprise that Gasly's penalty was reversed while others remained unchanged.

The controversy highlights inconsistent application of regulations and raises questions about the FIA's measurement protocols. With Russell's title hopes directly impacted and multiple drivers affected, this dispute could influence how future pit-lane infractions are handled across the championship.
