FIA to Hear McLaren, Red Bull Monaco GP Appeal

Next week, the FIA will hear appeals from McLaren and Red Bull against the decision to reinstate Pierre Gasly's podium at the Monaco Grand Prix. The Alpine driver originally finished third on 7 June but received two five-second penalties for pitlane speeding, dropping him to seventh and handing Red Bull's Isack Hadjar a podium. Alpine immediately lodged a right of review bid, presenting evidence that Gasly had not exceeded the 60km/h limit. During the hearing, FOM admitted an error in distance measurement used for speed calculations, causing over-reported average speeds. Stewards accepted this error, rescinding Gasly's penalties and reinstating his third-place finish.

This decision angered several teams, as other drivers had already served similar penalties during the race. Oscar Piastri of McLaren expressed disbelief, noting he made an extra pitstop to serve his penalty, affecting his final position. George Russell of Mercedes was particularly impacted, receiving a drive-through penalty that dropped him from potential podium contention to 12th place, falling 68 points behind teammate Kimi Antonelli.

McLaren and Red Bull have appealed the decision, while Mercedes withdrew their right to review. The FIA's International Court of Appeal will hear the case on Tuesday 25 August at their headquarters in Paris following the Dutch Grand Prix.
