Mercedes drops Monaco appeal as Gasly regains podium

Mercedes withdrew its request for a right‑of‑review into the Monaco Grand Prix after Alpine successfully appealed the penalties that had dropped Pierre Gasly from third to seventh. Five drivers – Lewis Hamilton, Oscar Piastri, Franco Colapinto, George Russell and Gasly – each received five-second penalty pit‑lane speeding penalties. The appeal restored Gasly’s podium finish and the decision also preserved Mercedes’ position in the constructors’ battle, preventing a larger points swing.

Gasly never served his two five‑second penalties, so officials added ten seconds to his race time, pushing him out of the podium. Russell mis‑served his five‑second penalty, receiving a drive‑through that dropped him to 12th and cost Mercedes fifteen championship points. Alpine proved Monaco’s pit‑lane distance was mis‑measured, a factor the stewards called a “significant and relevant new element,” leading to Gasly’s penalties being rescinded.

Team principal Toto Wolff had called any success from a review a long shot, noting the risk of opening “a can of worms.” McLaren and Red Bull have taken their appeals to the FIA International Court of Appeal in Paris. With the Austrian Grand Prix looming, the classification stands as final and points are locked in.
