Mercedes pulls review over Russell's Monaco penalty

Mercedes withdrew its right‑of‑review request into George Russell’s Monaco Grand Prix time penalty, the FIA confirmed Thursday. Russell, along with several others, received a five‑second pit‑lane speeding penalty that later proved to stem from a timing glitch at the pit entry. The error forced Russell to serve the penalty incorrectly, dropping him from podium contention. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri suffered the same fate, losing a chance at a podium as the penalty was applied incorrectly.

Alpine’s Pierre Gasly missed two penalties during the race, initially dropping him off the podium. After the stewards rescinded his sanctions on review, he was briefly promoted to third before officials reinstated the penalties, stripping the place again. Gasly’s reinstatement sparked Red Bull and McLaren appeals, claiming it rewards a driver who failed to serve penalties while other erroneous penalties stay untouched.

Team principal Toto Wolff admitted the Mercedes petition had little chance of success, and the withdrawal leaves Russell’s result unchanged. With the FIA still set to hear the Red Bull‑McLaren appeal at its International Court of Appeal, the Monaco controversy highlights how timing system failures can reshape race outcomes and fuel further regulatory disputes.
